Beauty and the Beast

I thought Beauty and the Beast was wonderful. I don’t usually like to watch movies more than once, (I am really weird, I know) but I would pay to go see this movie again. The music was enchanting, the imagery was beautiful, and over all it was a very moving film.

There was a lot of character development, and I loved being able to see the back story of Belle and the Beast. Without spoiling anything, I will just say, their back stories made their characters more real. Disney did such a good job at bringing them to life for me. Their love story seems so genuine. They connect on a deeper level rather than a superficial “love at first sight” kind of way. Their pasts seem to give them something in which they both can relate. Belle grows to love the Beast for who he is inside despite his alarming appearance. Their story is a true love story, a true Fairy tale!

There were so many “Feel good moments” where characters sacrificed for the good of others. Belle takes her father’s place in prison so that he can be free. She later stays and helps the injured Beast when he has done nothing to deserve her care and she could have easily escaped. The Beast lets Belle go so she can help her father, even though he knows his last chance at breaking the spell would disappear just as she would. When you see a glimpse into Belle’s past, you also see her Father’s incredible love towards her. I may have cried more than once during this movie.

Belle’s Gown:

I was especially impressed by the beautiful yellow ball gown Belle wore. It managed to be more modest than the dress worn in the cartoon version of the movie. Emma’s dress had sleeves covering her shoulders whereas the cartoon version had sleeves hanging off her shoulders leaving them completely bare. Her dress was modest and gorgeous in this film. Again the imagery was absolutely beautiful.

Overall this movie was a sensation to the eyes and ears, as well as the soul. It was a movie that made me go home and think, I want to be a better person. I want to be as brave, as selfless, and as confident as Belle. The opening song goes,

“the girl is strange but special

a most peculiar mad’moiselle!”

She really is different from the other townsfolk, and I love her all the more for it.  She doesn’t let their opinions change who she is inside. She is full of so much personality and goodness, and I left this movie feeling happy, energized and motivated to be a better person.

Honey Lime Chicken Enchilladas

This recipe is a favorite at our house. Not only is it a crowd pleaser, but it is simple to make, and makes great left overs! I love making a double batch and freezing the extra enchiladas in individual sandwich baggies to eat at a later date. It is so nice to have home cooked food in your freezer that can be pulled out at a moment’s notice, popped into the microwave for a few minutes, and consumed. You know, not the kind that takes half a day to thaw out, and another half of a day to cook. I am convinced that individual serving sizes of precooked meals are the way to go. Read more about this, and find other freezer friendly meals here.

We have also made these enchiladas with no cheese because my son is allergic to milk, and they were still delicious. There is so much good flavor in the meat and enchilada sauce, that the cheese is hardly missed. Omitting the cheese makes the recipe slightly healthier as well. So make it with or without cheese, I don’t care, I just thought I would share what we found in omitting the cheese. Finding Dairy free recipes that the whole family likes, can be hard, so it is always nice to add a new one into the rotation.

We have also used this honey lime chicken for tacos, nachos, taco salad, fajitas, burritos, and even in homemade macaroni. The possibilities are endless. Here is the recipe.

Honey Lime Chicken Enchilladas

Ingredients

  • 6 Tbs honey
  • 5 Tbs lime juice
  • 1 Tbs chili powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • 8 Chicken tenders cooked and shredded** 8-10 flour tortillas

  • 1 16 oz can green enchilada sauce

  3. Wisk honey, lime juice, chili powder and garlic powder together in a medium sized bowl.
  4. Add shredded chicken to bowl and stir to coat all chicken evenly.
  5. Fill each tortilla with chicken and cheese, roll it up and place on top of the enchilada sauce in the pan. Continue until all tortillas/meat are rolled up in the pan.(reserve about ½ cup cheese to sprinkle over the top.
  6. Pour remaining enchilada sauce over tortillas, and spread evenly.
  7. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees ferhenheit or until heated through.
  8. **Egg beaters are great for shredding meat quickly and easily.

The General Women’s Session of Conference and My Mom

Come Listen to a Prophet’s Voice! The General Women’s Session last week was wonderful. My mom and I always get together to watch it and then go out to dinner afterwards. I can’t get enough mom and me time, and what better way to spend it than while feeling the spirit watching the General Women’s Session and and eating good food!

What I got out of Women’s Conference:

Several times during conference I heard mention of the importance of a “bedrock understanding of the doctrine of Christ.” Which originated in Elder Russell M. Nelson’s Talk A Plea to My Sisters. At first, all I could think of was, “Bedrock? Isn’t that were the Flintstones live?” ***Insert Flinstones themesong here.***  When I came back to reality, I started to really think about it.

The Food! The Company!

After the Women’s Session, my mom and I ended up going to Kneaders, and I felt totally like a Utah girl! While we were there we noticed there were other sisters still in Sunday dress who apparently had the same Idea that we did about combining conference with good food! It is fun to know that there are sisters all around the world who put their Saturday night on pause for a moment to listen to the same instruction that I listened to. I am grateful for the worldwide sisterhood we have in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints!

When we were at kneaders, waiting for our delicious food, my mom and I decided to hop back in line to look at the delicious pastries and breads to decide what we wanted for dessert. As we were looking at the cookies and brownies, the power went out! The lights were out, except for a few emergency lights, and the cash registers wouldn’t work without power so the customers would have to wait to be served. After a few minutes it became apparent that the power would not be coming back on any time soon so I mentioned to my mom that they should pass around free samples to keep their customers from leaving. My mom jumped on that, and gave the idea to an employee. It worked, and a few minutes later pumpkin bread slices were passed around! It was so great! Usually my mom is the one who comes up with the crazy ideas, and she puts me up to them, but this time it was the opposite. We had a good laugh over it, and enjoyed our free desert! We may be crazy, but we always have a good time!

Looking Forward to General Conference

I love spending time with my mom, and among all the craziness of life. I am glad I can count on spending time with her during the Women’s General Session. Fortunately, we typically get together when the boys are all out watching the priesthood session too. Two weeks in a row of Mother Daughter time! That’s a total win in my book!

I am really excited for General Conference today and tomorrow! Back in April, in order to make General Conference more meaningful, I took a challenge from our Stake President to listen/read all of the conference talks 6 times before the next conference. I think I listened to them each about 4 times. I didn’t quite get there, but it was better than I have ever done in the past, and I have grown to really know and love the words from the April Conference. I am planning to reach my goal this time! I bookmarked general conference on lds.org on my phone, so it was easy to access. It was nice to be able to listen to conference without the distraction of my children. I love my kids so much, and I want them to have a good experience during conference too, so I try to focus on them during the actual session. It was really fun to catch up and re-listen to the talks. I was able to learn something new each time I listened.

During General Conference, there are so many wonderful things that we can do/prepare so that our kids can enjoy the General Conference Experience. Pinterest of course is a great resource. I love the things that I found directly on LDS.ORG for children. You can access them here at LDS.ORG.

I hope you and your family enjoy General Conference!

Sharing Time 2016- Opening Excercises Overview

At the beginning of the year my son became a member of the Sunbeams class (Children age 3-4) in Primary. Every Sunday in Primary, the children participate in opening exercises singing and reciting a certain Song, Scripture, and Article of Faith. They rotate to a new set each month. All of these can be found in the 2016 Outline for Sharing Time. I decided that I wanted to be teaching my son these things at home as well, so this became part of our bedtime routine. As the year went on, we have realized that at bedtime our kids are cranky, and we don’t get as much out of it as we want to or we just skip it all together. We are going to try doing this as a family every morning before breakfast. I think this is a great way to set the tone for the day, but it is also a great thing to leave your kids thinking about as they go to bed.  It doesn’t really matter when you do it, but the more consistently it is done, the better your kids will learn. Repetition is key to learning and memorization.

Sharing Time 2016- Songs:

Near the end of the year, the Primary Children present a Primary Program for the entire congregation sharing the songs that they learned throughout the year. Since the dates on the program vary from ward to ward, the fall semester tends to be a time to review the songs that need most attention. I like to print out the sheet music as well as play the music and sing along with the Free LDS Music App. You can download the Apple App or the Android App.  Here is a list of the Songs/Links to sheet music for the songs our Primary has learned so far this year:

December Scripture: “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works” (Matthew 16:27)

Sharing Time 2016- Articles of Faith

I have been surprised by how well my son has been able to memorize the Articles of Faith at such a young age! He doesn’t know them all word for word yet, but he is pretty good at filling in the blanks, and I am sure it will only get better next year. There really is something to doing it every night that embeds it into their brains, its awesome.

The order of the articles of faith are not listed in the Sharing Time Outline. The order is determined by the Primary Presidency. This year some of the scriptures selected in the Sharing Time Outline were Articles of faith, so the Primary’s Presidency in our ward decided to review them according to the topic of the month. Here is the order:

January: Article of Faith 8

February: Article of Faith 2

March:Article of Faith 5

April: Article of Faith 3

May: Article of Faith 6

June:Article of Faith 4

July: Article of Faith 9

August:Article of Faith 12

September: Article of  Faith 11

October: Article of Faith 7

November: Article of Faith  1

December: Article of Faith 10

How to Choose the Preschool Thats Right for You and Your Child

You are Running out of time! The pressure is setting in. What are you going to do about preschool this year? July is more than half gone, and school starts back up next month! The craziest part  for me is that my son is old enough to go to preschool! He was just a baby yesterday right? Where did the time go?  I don’t want to even blink because before I know it, he will be driving a car and picking up girls for dates. For now though, he is my little ‘Big Guy’. I recently asked him if he ‘liked’ girls, and he responded, “Grandma is a girl, she is a lady!” I hope he stays in this phase for at least another 16 years! But alas, he is getting older, and he is growing up. It is time for him to start to experience new things, and grow as an individual and not just be my baby. So back on the age old question, What are we going to do for Preschool this year?

Getting Silly with preschool at home. One of the most valuable lessons mothers can teach their children is that they are important and loved.

I love doing  preschool with my son at home. He is at the age that he loves to learn, and often asks me if we can do Preschool together. I think he enjoys the one on one Quality Time we share together. My goal when we do preschool activities is to create an exciting and safe space where he can learn and gain self confidence without fear or judgment. I try to keep it fun, and if the lesson becomes frustrating for either of us, I try to change gears. At home, I want him to have good memories and feelings towards me, and towards learning. We are not very structured in our preschool at home, which can be good and bad. It is good because he has a loving environment at home to learn in, but bad because the learning is not very consistent. No matter how hard I try, we do not do preschool everyday. That being said, we will be using a hybrid method between home schooling and schooling away from home for Preschool starting this fall.

How to Choose the Preschool Thats Right for You and Your Child
Little Stars Learning Program at Hollywood Kids Academy’s Henderson Location.

He will start attending Hollywood Kids Academy “Little Stars Learning Program” for a couple of hours a few days a week. I am hoping this will help him transition easily into kindergarten next year. I feel that it will be a great way for him to gain independence and individuality. He will be able to socialize, learn, grow, and I think he will love it! I have been very impressed with this company. Hollywood Kids Academy offers more than just preschool. They offer classes in Musical Theatre, Dance, and Vocal for ages 3-19. They are now based out of 3 locations including their newest Summerlin/Southwest location at 4145 S. Grand Canyon Suite #106. My family and I have been to several performances, and are so pleased every time. Hollywood Kids Academy is a noncompetitive atmosphere where kids have a safe space to learn and gain  self confidence while developing their skills at whatever level they may be. To read more about their mission click here.

hka logo

My goal as a mother is not to raise the next Genius, Olympian, or Billionare, but to raise kids with good Character. I’m not saying that it’s not possible to do both, but rather that my focus is geared more towards instilling integrity, honesty, hard work, self discipline, charity, leadership, organization, etc. If the next generation is raised to have these characteristics, we will have a bright future. A person with character can accomplish anything! I feel that the environment at Hollywood Kids Academy will help reinforce the values that I teach my son at home. I am trying to establish a house for my family that is pleasing to the Lord as taught in Docterine and Covenants 88:119:

Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;

We will still continue to have our unstructured ‘learning moments’ together at home. I don’t think we will ever stop. There is so much to be learned throughout our lives. You may even be suprised at the things that your children teach you. Creating that safe space at home can make it easier to teach the hard lessons in life. My house is, and always will be, a house of learning.

2016-07-06 11.33.04

Whatever decision parent’s make regarding their children’s education whether it be public, private, charter, or home school is personal.  If homeschooling is going to stress you or your child out, or add tension to your relationship, it might not be worth it. It can be so different in each household with each child and their unique needs. This hybrid method is what we have decided is best for our son at this time. His needs may change over the years in which we will need to prayerfully adapt. We may make a different decision for our baby girl, or other children we may have in the future based on their individual needs. I hope that mothers will be blessed with inspiration on what to do for their children’s education. I hope they will have the courage to see what is best for each of their children rather than yielding to the ‘norm’. Mother’s who pray regularly with, and for their children, can receive divine guidance for their well being. As for us, we are excited for this new opportunity to grow! Best of luck to you and your little one(s)!

How to Say I Love You in a Way They Will Understand

Imagine that someone you love speaks a different language than you. If they only speak Chinese, and you only speak English, saying I love you in English isn’t going to mean much to them. In The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, he discusses how to communicate love effectively by learning the Love Language of your loved one. I love his book and will be referencing it as I write this post.

The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
I have had this book for years, an updated version was published in 2015. You can purchase it here.

What I have Learned About the 5 Love Languages:

  1. Words of Affirmation- Through your words, you can build or destroy a person who’s Primary love language is Words of Affirmation. The bite of criticism can sting just as much as a complement can lift. It is important to genuinely notice and verbally express gratitude to this type of person. Their drive to succeed stems from the compliments they are issued. When you praise them, they feel loved and appreciated.
  2. Quality Time- This love language may take the most time to communicate, but it is just as important as the others. Spending Quality time means listening. Turn off the TV and listen to what they have to say. Give them your full attention. If you are in the middle of a task when this type of person wants their attention, consider this statement. A person who’s Primary Love Language is Quality Time would rather wait a moment for you to finish your task so that they can have your undivided attention, than to have only part of your attention while your attention is divided. It is okay to say, wait a moment while I finish this, I would like to give you 100% of my attention. They will feel that they are important and wanted.
  3. Receiving Gifts- If a person is constantly giving gifts to make you smile, this may be their love language. This person may also give gifts to say “I am Sorry”. This type of person responds positively to being given gifts. They don’t have to be expensive gifts to make them feel loved. The gifts that mean the most are ones that are thought out. They appreciate you taking the time to know them and understanding what will make them smile.
  4. Acts of Service- Helping out with household chores, or running errands for this type of person can go a long way. They feel loved when you step in to help, or surprise them with a clean home, or a hot meal. If there is a chore you dislike, and your spouse knows it, think about what it will communicate to them if you do it happily for them. Doing something like this says I am doing this because I love you loud and clear.
  5. Physical Touch- Keep in mind that Physical Touch is more than physical intimacy. Physical touch can mean a pat on the back when you are proud, a gentle caress of the arm as you walk by, a hug when they come home, an embrace when they are sad. This type of person thrives when they experience positive physical interactions. When you touch them in a loving way, they feel accepted and loved. How to Say I Love You in a Way They Will Understand

You can go to 5lovelanguages.com to take a free quiz to determine your primary love language. I took the test and found that my primary love language is Acts of Service. I also found that Receiving Gifts ranked 0 in importance to me. I had fun taking the test so I had my husband and 4 year old son take it too. (We had to simplify the verbiage to help  him understand the questions.) Their results both showed Receiving Gifts as their Primary Love Language. Sounds like I need to learn how to speak that language so that I can keep their “Love Tanks” full (As Gary Chapman calls it). You can take a quick test here to determine your primary love language.

Speaking the Love Language that your loved one speaks will go a long way when you are trying to communicate your love for them. The book The five Love Languages is such an easy read, and can improve the quality of your relationships. Gary Chapman is a marriage counselor who tells some wonderful stories about his clients over the years, and how their relationships improved by speaking their spouses love language. To get a more in depth description about the love languages and how to speak them you can purchase The Five Love Languages here. There are several different books aimed for different audiences including singles, children, teenagers, and men. Check them out here.

The Best Deal I Have Ever Seen on a Kindle Paperwhite

If you have been thinking about purchasing a Kindle Paperwhite now is the time! I got my husband one for Christmas and he has used it almost every day since. Because they retail for about $119, I thought I was getting a great Black Friday deal at only $99, but when I saw the price today I was shocked!  My husband let his mom use his Kindle on a recent vacation and she loved it so much, the kids pooled together to get her one for her birthday. We have purchased 2 of them in the last 6 months, and can personally recommend them.

kindle

Some of the great features of the Kindle Paperwhite:

  • Gentle Lighting: You can use them in any lighting as you can adjust the back light to best fit your surroundings.
  • Long battery life: The charge can last for weeks.
  • Reduced price on books: Purchasing books electronically for a Kindle is almost always considerably cheaper than purchasing paper books.
  • Exclusive access to books: Some books are only offered electronically.

These are just a few of the many reasons we love the Kindle Paperwhite. To checkout this limited time deal click here.

The Happy Housewife Blog hit 5,000 views last night!  The blog has only been up and running for about three and a half weeks. What started out as a way for me to share and express my feelings has grown into something amazing. I never dreamed that I would have such a positive response.

I Attribute This Success to Three Things:

  1. Support. I have felt so much love and support from friends, family, and other viewers. You all are amazing! Thank you so much for your support! Please continue to click, read, and share! It has been so fun to come up with content for the blog! Today I would like to open it up to my readers to add ideas for future posts. What content would you like to see on the blog? Leave a comment at the end of this post.
  2. God. I believe that I am sharing things that encourage people to be a little better, and come a little closer to God. As I prayerfully write, I feel that Heavenly Father inspires me with ideas, and helps me know what to say. He guides my hand. I hope He will continue to bless me as I follow his guidance.
  3. Work. You get out what you put in. I have spent a LOT of time working on the blog. Time creating content, time taking pictures, time editing, correcting, and re-correcting. Time driving traffic to the site. Time managing social media accounts. Time working the logistics of setting up/maintaining a website. (Who knew there was so much to it?) It has been a complete learning curve, and I continue to learn new things every day!

Blogging Success!

You may be wondering, how does a Stay at Home Mom have time to keep up with a blog without detracting from her kids? We started this thing called putting the kids to bed at 7:00. It is so great! Let me tell you, since I have been a mom, I have NEVER had this much time to work on ANYTHING! I have worked on blog stuff from 7:30 pm to about 12:00 am or 1:00 am just about every day for the past three weeks. It makes me feel alive and rejuvenated. It makes me a happier person, and that in turn is good for the whole family. You know the saying;

Women have great potential to spread good.

Well I think it is true. Wives and mothers have the ability to really set the tone in their homes. In my home, I am trying to set a happy tone! Having the time to recharge and pursue my dreams has put a spring in my step. I believe my family has been blessed as a result.

My husband and I made a rule that I should only work on the blog when the children are in bed, and I am so glad that we set that boundary. As much as I love my children, I fear I would become distracted by the blog if we didn’t set this rule. I just get so excited about the blog! I do still post things about the blog on social media during the day while my kids are up and about, but I was spending time on social media before I started the blog. Now I am just spending more time posting instead of browsing. Somehow I find more fulfillment that way. Sometimes scanning social media can be depressing, and it is easy to compare yourself to others. In contrast, I feel lifted when I create things, and share them.

Sometimes Selfies are Important!
I am going to celebrate with a no make up selfie, and ice cream. Mostly ice cream. But seriously moms don’t have enough pictures of themselves. We are usually the one behind the camera so we have plenty of documentation of our kids, and even our husbands with the kids, but rarely do we catch pictures of ourselves. I want to document myself with a selfie tonight so I remember the happiness I am feeling right now.

I am so glad that I have found this new passion! I have always loved writing, and have always wanted to be a wife and mother. In recent years I have been able to marry a wonderful man and have my dream job of being a Stay at Home Mom. I am so grateful that I have been able to learn so much about taking care of my family and home. It is so fun to be able to share it with all of you. Now I can combine all of my passions into one space on my blog, and I am loving every minute of it.

Thanks for all the kind words, and encouragement you have sent my way. I look forward to what is ahead! Don’t forget to share what you would like to see more of on the blog in the Future!
